In 2011, the Football Association of Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding with their counterparts from the Football Association of Malaysia.
With it came the return of a Singapore team to the Malaysian domestic scene and the team was aptly named LIONSXII.
While the excitement off the pitch amongst fans was one that echoed loud and clear, the Football Association of Singapore began putting together the team officials who in turn selected a squad of 29 players who would trade their current clubs for a slice of history in the Malaysian Super League.
One of Singapore’s favourite footballing sons, V.Sundramoorthy is called to the helm as Head Coach of the LIONSXII for the second season and he has brought former Gombak United coach K. Balagumaran to become his assistant.
The search to put together a winning formula saw a good blend of current Singapore stars like Shahril Ishak, Baihakki Khaizan, Isa Halim, and Hariss Harun sign up for the team along with the rising crop of Safuwan Baharudin, Izwan Mahbud and Khairul Nizam come to the fore.
With huge expectations weighing on their shoulders, the LIONSXII will go on to write their names into the Singapore history books as the first team to participate in the Malaysian domestic tournaments after a 17-year hiatus.
They will play their home matches at the historical Jalan Besar Stadium which houses an artificial turf while waiting for the grand Sports Hub to be ready in 2014.
The team colours will be red/red/red for their home games while the blue/blue/blue kit will be their away kit.
With a slew of fanatical support behind them, the LIONSXII will seek to bring back the LIONS ROAR and enthral the Lion City with the passion of yesteryears.
LIONSXII. For Fans, For Passion, For Country, For Football.
