Fandi: Everyone did their part

LionsXII head coach Fandi Ahmad praised his players for the team effort that helped his side secure a 2-1 win against Terengganu FA.

The outlook of the match could have been a very different one after key player Khairul Amri had to be substituted after just nine minutes due to injury, and especially after Terengganu then took the lead six minutes later.

However, Amri’s replacement Sufian Anuar equalised almost immediately, before fellow substitute Christopher Van Huizen scored the all-important winner in the 89th minute.

“Every player played very well and did their part,” Fandi said after the game.

“The rain benefited us too, we just had to kick the ball away.”

Fandi also praised both Sufian and Van Huizen, but he felt Izwan stood out the most in the match.

“Izwan played very well, even though we were unsure of putting him in, because he had a high fever today,” Fandi shared.

“But like I said, they are very spirited, disciplined, and this is very important for football teams and young players.”

The victory, which helped LionsXII to top Group A, came with repercussions too.

Apart from Amri’s injury, Izzdin also picked up a yellow card, which means he will be ruled out for the quarter-final match against Pahang FA.

This set back [is disappointing], hopefully Amri can recover, but the bigger setback is that we will be missing Izzdin for the next match,” Fandi stated.

“For me, it’s unnecessary of the referee to book him with the game finishing, but we have to swallow it and prepare other players.

“Other than that, I thought the referee was quite fair today.”
