SINGAPORE, 21 MARCH 2015: LionsXII coach Fandi Ahmad felt improvements will be needed despite thrashing KL SPA Putrajaya 4-0 in the Malaysia FA Cup on Saturday evening.
Goals from Madhu Mohana, Gabriel Quak and a brace from Khairul Amri gave the LionsXII a result which matched their biggest victory of the season, also in the same competition against PB Melayu Kedah.
However, the LionsXII coach believed his team are capable of more, especially when they are leading a game.
“We played (well) in patches,” said Fandi. “I thought certain times in the game we dominated; the interchange of passes was good at times.
“After (leading) 2-0, we were a bit complacent which is not good, but in the end the result was good for us and we move to the next round.
“It’s good that they were able to free themselves and play without pressure. I thought we didn’t let (KL SPA) play for half an hour. It was a good win for us.”
Fandi also singled out Christopher van Huizen, who made his first start for the team, and Amri for their performances tonight, while noting that Sahil Suhaimi will get better as he works harder.
“Chris was not bad, he started quite well today,” Fandi stated.
“I’m happy for Amri because he’s been trying hard to score goals and today, he scored two and showed the confidence going forward.
“(Sahil) needs to work harder on getting into position and making more penetrative runs because he’s not a target man. I’m happy he’s trying very hard and got into scoring positions a few times. Slowly, he will get better.”
The LionsXII will face Johor Darul Ta’zim II next in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and he believes this will be a difficult contest for the team.
However, he expressed hopes of advancing in the next round.
“We will try, every game is important,” Fandi affirmed. “They have some good players (and) it will be a very tough game but we are willing to fight because the draw has been very good.
“Now we must try to take advantage. It’s a two-legged quarter-final; I hope we can go far in this competition.”
