23 APRIL 2015: LionsXII head coach Fandi Ahmad was glad to see his side bounce back from a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Selangor as they marched into the Malaysia FA Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.
The LionsXII did so by seeing off Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) II 2-0 at the Pasir Gudang Stadium to qualify for the next round on a 4-0 aggregate score.
Fearing a JDT II onslaught on goal as they were behind by a two-goal deficit, Fandi had instructed his side to push forward and secure the first goal in the match.
The LionsXII adhered to his instructions and were rewarded with the opener in the 19th minute, when Khairul Nizam glanced a header into the back of the net.
“I thought we dominated the first half, we created many chances,” Fandi said after the game.
“The intention was to come here and grab an early goal. We needed to press them so we didn’t play defensively today.
“They (LionsXII) are definitely enjoying themselves, that’s the most important thing. The team spirit was good, the teamwork was good, and I thought we deserved to win today.”
LionsXII will face Terengganu in the two-legged semi-final and Fandi admitted that it looks like a tall order for his side to overcome.
However, he expressed confidence in his players’ ability to cope with Terengganu.
“We will not give up easily, we’ll take the fight to them and I’m sure that with a lot of hard work we will try to achieve something in the next game,” Fandi asserted.
