SINGAPORE, 23 MARCH 2015: The Council, management and staff of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) are deeply saddened by the passing of former Prime Minister and Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew today.
Mr Lee officially opened the iconic National Stadium in 1973 which subsequently enabled many Singaporeans to witness countless exciting and memorable matches until its closure in 2007. The legendary Kallang Roar, which is now renowned around the region, was also created during that time.
Mr Lee was also the guest of honour at the inaugural Inter-Constituency Soccer final for the Prime Minister’s Cup which was held at the old Jalan Besar Stadium on 7 July 1972 and attracted 25,000 fans. It was his first football match at Jalan Besar and he presented the trophy to Farrer Park United who became the first winners of the tournament after beating Pasir Panjang 2-1.
Mr Lee’s leadership of Singapore has enabled our country to grow, progress and prosper, and this, in turn, has led to Singaporeans being able to pursue many different career options, including that of being professional athletes and footballers.
The thoughts of everyone in the Singapore football fraternity are with the Lee family and we extend deep and sincere condolences to them in this difficult time.
