LIONSXII bow out of the Malaysia FA Cup tournament after goalless draw against defending champions Terengganu

SINGAPORE, 27 March 2012: LIONSXII bow out of the 2012 Malaysia FA Cup tournament after being held to a 0-0 draw by FA Cup defending champions Terengganu in their quarterfinals, 2nd Leg match played at the Jalan Besar Stadium in front of 6,488 fans on Tuesday evening.

With the uphill task of having to overcome a one-goal deficit, The LIONSXII started off the match strongly and signal their intentions to secure the Malaysia FA Cup Semi-Final slot.

The first real chance for the LIONSXII came in the 13th minute from a freekick but Khairul Nizam’s header was an inch too far off target.

V.Sundramoorthy’s men continued attacking Sharbinee Allawee’s goal in numbers but lacked the finishing prowess in the final third to ripple the back of the net.

The rest of the first-half followed in similar fashion and the anxious crowd had to sit nervously through the break to see if their team can wrestle the advantage on the home turf.

Looking not to disappoint the 6,000-odd fans at Jalan Besar Stadium who had turned up to rally behind the LIONSXII, Coach Sundram brought on in-form goal scorer and captain, Shahril Ishak in the 57th minute.

The crowd roared in excitement and anticipation of the LIONSXII talisman to continue his sizzling form in front of goal but try as hard as he did, Shahril was unable to break down the stubborn Terengganu defence.

Terengganu tested LIONSXII custodian, Hyrulnizam Juma’at in the 60th minute when Brazilian Erison Da Silva launched a spot-on freekick from almost 25 yards out, only to miss the goal by just an inch.

With the introduction of fresh legs in the form of Taufiq Rahmat and Yasir Hanapi, The LIONSXII created more chances upfront. However, they were unable to make those chances count at the end of the night.

The match then ended in a 0-0 draw and saw Terengganu progress into the next round with their one goal advantage over the LIONSXII.

“We anticipated the LIONSXII game plan and we were well prepared it. We wanted to absorb and counter and we did just that. We now move into the next round of the FA Cup and I will look to doing well in the Semi-Finals. ” said Terengganu coach, Mat Zan Mat Aris at the post-match press conference.

The visibly disappointed LIONSXII Coach Sundram said “I can’t ask for anything more from the boys as they gave their all but were unable to progress to the next round. We could have definitely scored from the chances we created and also the set-pieces. But playing against the defending champions, I can say we tried and we pushed them hard.”
