LIONSXII gain full points at home against Selangor PKNS

SINGAPORE, 25th AUGUST 2012: The LIONSXII gained three valuable points in the first Malaysian Cup game back on Singapore shores, coming from behind, to defeat Selangor PKNS, 3-1 in front of a vociferous crowd on Saturday evening at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Determined to put the 0-0 draw against Johor FC behind them, the LIONSXII showed their statement of intent by starting with two strikers, Shahril Ishak and Khairul Amri upfront.

Things did not get off to a good start for them though, as they fell behind by a goal just seven minutes into the game. Fauzan Dzulkifli won the ball in the middle of the park and romped deep into the home team’s half, before threading a superb through-ball to Fazli Baharudin. The PKNS No. 25 then places the ball perfectly past the outstretched arms of LIONSXII’s keeper Hyrulnizam Juma’at into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

However, parity was restored just five minutes later. A penetrative run by Shahril Ishak down the right allowed him to cross it for his strike partner Amri, whose side foot attempt found the back of the net for the equalizer, and his first goal of the campaign.

They then took the lead in the eighteen minute, via a Shaiful Esah freekick after Hariss Harun earned it. From at least thirty yards out, the Singapore International left-back then curled the ball into the top corner with perfection to make it 2-1.

The comeback was completed two minutes after the restart, with Captain Shahril sliding in to divert Hariss’ cutback from the left into the near empty net.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Selangor PKNS head coach Haji Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, conceded that the LIONSXII were a class above. “I think it’s was a good display by my side,” said Haji. “Knowing the LIONSXII were a better side, we cannot deny that. We were tactically sound, but however, we need experience at this level of football. Except for our two foreigners, the rest of the boys are locals and we even took two players from the second division for this match and they looked lost in the last twenty minutes.”

“I think we deserved a better result than this, but I still want to congratulate the LionsXII as they were the better team,” added the PKNS coach.

LIONSXII head coach, V. Sundramoorthy, felt that while the victory was a good one, it was still not the best performance by the boys. He said, “It’s always going to be difficult because we are just coming back from the fasting month and this is just our second game. I think that the team will be getting better with more games under the belt.”

“It is not easy for the players to play back to back games,” he added. “We will go back and have a good rest and prepare for the next game.”
