LIONSXII overcome T-Team 2-1 to continue unbeaten run in the Malaysian Super League

SINGAPORE, 31 March 2012: After bowing out of the Malaysia FA Cup tournament, the LIONSXII set their sights back on the Malaysian Super League (MSL) and secured a 2-1 win over T-Team at the Jalan Besar Stadium this evening.

The LIONSXII welcomed T-team to the Lions’ Den and were determined to come away with all three points following the return of key players from injury whom were missed sorely. The match got off to a quick start as the teams looked to gain the psychological advantage by breaking the deadlock first.

But it was not meant to be done in the first 45 minutes with both teams made to rue chances which could have been converted into goals.

It took 51 minutes and a Safirul Sulaiman through pass to break the deadlock. Latching on the through ball, Captain Shahril Ishak jinked past his defenders to slot the ball home, sending the 6,871 fans into a frenzy.

The joy however lasted for all but three minutes as T-Team’s captain Zairo Anuar pulled his side back into the game with a nicely taken goal.

Shahril had the chance to get the lead for the LIONSXII through a penalty in the 60th minute but T-Team’s custodian Iqbal Suhimi denied the captain his chance to get on the scoresheet again.

With the score locked at 1-1, the teams surged ahead in search of the winner and the LIONSXII were duly rewarded in the 86th minute.

While trying to weave past his marker, Agu Casmir was fouled in the penalty box which saw another penalty given to the LIONSXII. Shahdan Sulaiman stepped up on this occasion to take the spot kick and he was spot on to give his team-mates a reason to cheer.

They then proceeded to hold on to the win, a narrow one-goal lead and successfully did so, with the final score reading, LIONSXII 2-1 T-Team.

The LIONSXII went on to be league leaders for a brief period while holding out on the Kelantan vs Felda United match result.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, LIONSXII coach V.Sundramoorthy praised his boys for giving their best as he went on to say “It is hard when you have a tight schedule and you throw in the travelling but I am happy with the performances of the players as they are trying their best. I can’t ask for more. The team was positive despite being in a 1-1 match and kept pushing which is how we got the 2nd penalty.”

Looking visibly disappointed, T-Team coach Yunus Alif mentioned, “I appreciate my players’ efforts for the whole 90 minutes. We were a goal down and we came back with a goal but bad decisions cost us the game. It also demoralised my players as the match went on. However, I would like to congratulate the LIONSXII on their win as they managed to beat us here. There is much more to come in the Malaysian Super League for both teams and I will look to plan for the next match .”
