LionsXII were given a heroes’ reception on Sunday evening when they touched down at Changi Airport Terminal 2, with over 2,000 fans gathered there to welcome them back.
While the players had expected for a crowd to turn up and celebrate their Malaysia FA Cup triumph, they admitted they were surprised by the number of fans who came.
“I was expecting a few hundred cause the next day is a working day so i thought they would be busy,” said Sahil Suhaimi, the two-goal hero in Saturday’s final.
“It’s overwhelming to come back and have that kind of treatment of fan, it’s really great.”
Defender Madhu Mohana added: “It was incredible to see so many fans at the airport. We were all shocked when we first saw the crowd.”
“We are all really blessed to have this much support. It has been a great journey so far and this Cup is for the fans.
“We owe the fans so much for their undying support. To see such a big crowd during our games and airport means a lot to us. Thank you so much to all the fans”
After receiving such a welcome, the LionsXII asserted that they will use this experience to push themselves further so as to vindicate the fans’ belief in them.
“This trophy means a lot to us, but I know the boys will not just stop there. This (the fans’ reception) is a huge boost to us, and will give us the motivation to go all out in the Malaysian Super League and Malaysia Cup,” Sahil said.
