LionsXII return to their winning ways with magnificent 5-0 win over Selangor PKNS FC

SINGAPORE, 17 April 2012:  LionsXII returned to their winning ways in the Malaysian Super League with a convincing 5-0 win over Selangor PKNS in front of 7,139 fans at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After losing 1-0 away to PKNS last week, the LionsXII planned to revenge the loss and they did so in style.

The LionsXII hit a shell-shocked PKNS side by going 3-0 up in the first 26 minutes.

Safuwan Baharudin opened the scoring when he tapped Shaiful Esah’s freekick into the net just 17 minutes into the match. The ball had evaded everyone before Safuwan popped up at the back to direct the ball into the net.

Shaiful Esah doubled the lead just two minutes later. Ahmad Azlan handled the ball on the right side of the pitch, conceding another freekick. This time, Shaiful Esah went for goal, curling the ball past everyone into an empty net with Remezy Che Ros caught in no man’s land.

It was 3-0 on the twenty sixth minute, with the LionsXII scoring from yet another set piece. Shahdan Sulaiman’s corner found an unmarked Sevki Sha’Ban who got his first goal of the season with a header.

With the 12th man cheering them on, LionsXII continued to surge forward in search of more goals. They were duly rewarded in the second half when striker Agu Casmir got his name on the scoresheet for the first time in the season.

Agu’s first and LionsXII’s fourth came eight minutes after the restart. Isa Halim played a great ball towards Shahdan Sulaiman out on the right flank and the playmaker crossed it in perfectly for Agu Casmir to register his maiden goal.

The fifth and final goal of the night came three minutes before time, from yet again another set piece situation. Shaiful Esah’s delivery from a freekick on the left found Safwan Bahrudin, and he headed towards goal. Remezy Che Ros managed to save it, but the ball fell onto Agu’s path and the striker made no mistake by heading it home.

Despite a 5-0 scoreline, PKNS did manage to threaten LionsXII particularly through Nicoise Mickael Dawood. However, LionsXII custodian Hyrulnizam Juma’at  produced wonderful saves to deny the foreign striker and keep his clean sheet.

The win ensured that LionsXII remained at the top of the Malaysian Super League table and extended their lead to five points, although they have played three more games than second placed Kelantan.

A visibly disappointed PKNS head coach Haji Abdul Rahman said, “It’s two totally different games. When we played at home, we were more enthusiastic and we wanted to go for the win. At that time LionsXII were tired and over confident but we were willing to go all the way. We lacked experience and this is the first time we are playing on an artificial turf.”

LionsXII head coach V. Sundramoorthy said, “Basically I never expected to win by five goals, but that’s football. Sometimes the unexpected happens and this team hasn’t lost away, so we had to break their duck. I think the boys were magnificent today, and the performance is a five star performance. It’s the best game of the season.”
