LIONSXII secure first three points of their 2012 Malaysian Super League campaign

7,168 fans brought back the ‘Kallang Wave’ at Jalan Besar Stadium in a night that saw the LIONSXII overcome Kuala Lumpur 2-1 in their third match of the 2012 Malaysian Super League season.

The LIONSXII wasted no time in signalling their intentions for victory as they poured forward to break the deadlock right from the get go.

Numerous attacking moves were initiated by the LIONSXII in the first 40 minutes but none found the back of the Kuala Lumpur goal despite some very close calls.

The Kuala Lumpur defensive four were also vital in keeping the score unchanged with their tight marking. However in the 41st minute, a brilliant cross from captain Shahril Ishak into the Kuala Lumpur penalty box found the feet of Alman Syazwan who tapped the ball into his own net under pressure from the impressive youngster, Irwan Shah who had a roaring game down the left.

With the lead in their hands, the home side strut into the dressing room with a sense of more to come.

Kuala Lumpur came back into the second half eyeing the equalizer but were left to rue their chances when playmaker Shahdan Sulaiman extended his team’s lead with a well taken goal in the 57th minute. And again, it was a pin-point cross that found Shahdan in the penalty box, this time from Irwan Shah.

Disaster struck in the 67th minute when Safuwan Baharudin was given his marching orders upon receiving his second yellow card of the match. The resulting penalty was converted successfully by KL’s Fazuan Abdullah.

A reduced scoreline and one less player for the LIONSXII, it was a long 20 minutes to the final whistle for the team as they kept the score intact to grab their first three points in the 2012 Malaysian Super League season.

The match then ended with the scoreboard reading LIONSXII 2-1 Kuala Lumpur. LIONSXII’s next game will be on the 21st of January 2012 against Sabah at the Likas Stadium.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, KL head coach Mohd Razip Ismail said “Coming to play the LIONSXII team in their home ground was going to hard for the opponents and they were also pushing for their first win. We lost the game due to our mistakes but I must say the LIONSXII’s game is a predictable one. And I had spoken to my players of it too but we got our first goal of the season and I hope this goal will spur them and encourage them.”

LIONSXII head coach V.Sundramoorthy mentioned “I was ok until the sending off of Safuwan and I feel the boys need to grow up soon and finish the game when they have the chances. Also not push their luck too much as you will be punished against strong teams if you keep playing this way. But for me, the first 70 minutes they played some great stuff and they kept good possession.”

He also joked that he’s the next best man for the striker’s role when asked about how Khairul Nizam and Agu Casmir’s injuries hurt the LIONSXII options in the attacking front for their upcoming games.
