LionsXII 2 – 1 Perak

Singapore, 6 April 2013: It was supposed to be Shahril Ishak’s night. Captain Marvel hit a brace in the match against Perak to maintain the LionsXII perch atop the MSL table.

The Lions continued their winning streak at Jalan Besar Stadium by notching their sixth consecutive home win by beating Perak 2-1 today. However, the win came at a heavy cost. In the next game against Negeri Sembilan next Saturday, Baihakki Khaizan will be forced to sit out after collecting a second yellow card. In the dying minutes of the game, Perak earned a freekick and the resulting skirmish at the LionXII goal mouth earned a consolation goal for the visitors.

The match against Perak started off well with Singapore gaining a lead in the 7th minute through Shahril Ishak. The goal came about after an incisive run into the heart of Perak’s defence by Hariss Harun who found Shahril. The resulting goal was greeted by cheers from the nearly 6,700 strong crowd.

Thereon, LionsXII took charge of the game and controlled the game. They had many chances at goal but their efforts were thwarted by either the Perak defence or less than satisfactory finishing. In the 57th  minute Shahril scored his second goal through a cross from Faris Ramli. The wildly cheering crowd anticipated for more goals. Hafiz Sujad who came on for Faris Ramli in the 71st  minute impressed with his tenacious performance. He chased the balls tirelessly and attempted two shots at goal.

Overall, the LionsXII, were relentless in their chase to contain the visitors. Isa Halim, Hariss Harun were solid in midfield and Shahril was the dynamo that energised the entire LionsXII outfit. Safuwan Baharudin and Baihakki Khaizan were impressive in defence and Izwan Mahbud was excellent in front of goal.

During the post-match press conference Perak FC’s coach Azraai Khor said he was disappointed with his team’s performance and that the goal that they got off the LionsXII was described as a “consolation goal.” He said the LionsXII played better and lost to a better team.

Sundram in his remarks said, he was disappointed that the LionsXII conceded so late in the game. “The boys have done their best and it’s important to stay focused.” He was also happy that Shahril is peaking at the right moment.

The LionsXII next have an away game against Negeri Sembilan at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman on Saturday, 13 April 2013.
